LG Sonic US is a water treatment company started in 2018 in downtown Scranton. With a sister company, LG Sonic BV in the Netherlands, the business specifically targets treatment of algae in lakes. Its core product is the MPC-Buoy, a solar-powered, data-driven system that treats and controls algae without the use of chemicals.

LG Sonic is offering a grant research internship for a college student to gain valuable experience learning to identify and respond to grant opportunities, enhancing lead development and revenue growth. Mentored by the Chief Water Scientist and working with the Grant Manager, the student will collaborate and use their project and time management skills to achieve measurable outcomes. They’ll benefit from insight into how government agencies, non-profit organizations, and the private sector cooperate to meet environmental goals.

This opportunity is a traditional (semester-long) in-person internship, flexible.

Logistics:

  • February 2022 start; 10-12 week-long internship
  • 5-15 hours flexible/week estimated, but required 100 hours total**
  • $12/hour wage
  • This opportunity will be in-person/on-site at 201 Lackawanna Avenue, Scranton, but flexible*

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Science, environmental, business, or marketing coursework/major required
  • All college student levels accepted
  • Skilled in use of online meeting platforms and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Skilled in managing projects independently and professionally
  • Strong skills in time management, communications, and collaborative teamwork
  • Ability to think analytically and solve problems as they arise

Projects: Mentored by LG Sonic’s Chief Water Scientist, and working with Grant Manager, the intern will help address LG Sonic’s needs by completing grant research as leads for the business. LG Sonic’s customers are municipalities, state, and federal governments:

  • Complete grant search by state & government level (including non-profit organizations) through internet searches of upcoming grants and funds available for prospects for algae control. Develop a running list and calendar, by state, of upcoming grants. Identify essential information required to respond to each grant application.
  • Complete town and lake searches that are having current algal issues. Develop a list of potential contacts.
  • Other marketing functions, as needed.

  • Be a resident of Lackawanna County currently enrolled in a college or university
  • Be a currently enrolled student of a Lackawanna County college or university
